Come with us and you will see, this our town of Halloween

Happy Halloween!

Whether you're going trick-or-treating, heading to a haunted house, watching scary movies, going to a party, passing out candy - whatever you're planning to do, I hope you have a blast!

One thing I love about Halloween is the movies!  This month seemed to fly so I didn't get to watch all my favorites.  But I wanted to share a list of some of them and why I heart them so.  (I didn't put them in a patricular order either.)

Nightmare on Elm Street – Unless you’ve lived under a rock then you’re well aware who Freddy is. Freddy scared the living crap out of me. I used to have nightmares after watching the first movie at a friend’s house. I couldn’t watch this again until I was twenty. The only reason why I did it was because Johnny Deep is in it.  I was all proud of myself that I made it through that I gav “The Final Nightmare”a try.
....Yea, that sucker got shut off halfway through.  If you can watch these movies, you are a brave soul.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space – Before you start laughing, hear me out here. Imagine being five years old and thinking some psycho clown is going to stick you in a balloon cocoon and suck the life out of you with a crazy fun straw. That is terrifying my friend, absolutely terrifying.

Lost Boys – Best. Vampire. Movie. Ever.

Witchboard – If you’ve ever messed around with an Ouija board, you know that eerie feeling you got when the thing started moving?  Try watching a whole movie based on it.  Is it cheesy?  Well, yes.  But it still makes me jump.

Poltergeist“Carol Anne, Carol Anne, where are you, Carol Anne?” The whole series is good, but nothing beats the first one. Maggot meat anyone?

I do have a family story to share with this.  When my older sister was about four years old (and she's going to kill me once she sees that I posted this), this was her movie. She used to crawl under her bed and watch the thing over and over again. One day she came into the living room with her baby doll in her hands.  Not a big deal except the baby doll had a butter knife shoved in its butt.

The Ring – This movie didn’t make me scream, but it freaked me the hell out!  Don't even act like you didn't get goosebumps when that girl climbed out of the TV with her limbs going all crazy like!  I wouldn't bother with the sequel though, that sucked.

IT – I cannot read a Stephen King novel to save my life. (Sorry Cheryl!!) But I do enjoy the movies that are based off his books. Pennywise takes the cake on scary freakin’ clowns.  “Everyone floats down here fat boy, muahaha!”

Pet Sematary – I’m not really an animal person. So undead animals are high up there on the creep factor. Even more freaky is how Gage is the most adorable little kid ever then turns into a zombie psycho.

Amityville Horror (remake) – The original was good, but for once I liked the remake better. Haunted houses are the biggest freak factor for me.  (Plus did you see Ryan Reynolds getting out of that bathrub? *melts*)

Saw 1 & 2 - Not exactly a film where things jump out and scream, “Boo!” But it does the trick on the freak meter. When you think of all those psychotic people running around doing this kind of stuff, it really creeps you out. I never watched the rest of them though. Fifteen minutes into the 3rd one and I was about to vomit everywhere.

House of Wax – Screw you, I liked this film! When it came out I thought it was going to one of those movies I would sit back and poke fun of.  But I ended up loving it!  I mean c’mon, Chad Michael Murry and Jared Padalecki together? Hot! Also the whole ankle getting sliced opened and the scene where the killer cuts a finger off - *shivers*

Halloween Town – Oh those Disney Channel originals. This movie makes me feel like a kid again. I would love to live in Halloween Town.

Casper – Back when this movie came out, I probably watched it a million times.  A lot of that had to do with my love for Casper and my obsession with Devon Sawa.

Nightmare Before Christmas – Tim Burton is the man. The songs are awesome (hint my title of this post). I love the animation.  And the bonus - it serves as a Christmas movie too!

Hocus Pocus – Leave it to a virgin to light a candle, and bring back three kick arse witches to Salem. Now three kids and a talking cat (who is awesome) have to save the town before the witches suck the life out of all the children. When I watched this movie when I was little, I wanted to be a witch so badly.

Troll 2 – Okay, it’s not scary…at all. It’s probably…okay, it is just about one of the worst horror movies ever made. Nothing like a dead grandpa to warn you about the evil goblins that are lurking around the town of, Nilbog…wait a second…Nilbog? Well, that’s goblin spelled backwards! Oh the horror! (Yes, you will be laughing your face off when you watch this.)

Practical Magic – This is one of my favorite movies in general. I love the aunts. I love the sisterly bound between Sally and Gillian. The plot is great. The house they live in is my dream house, and it’s just awesome! Go watch it!

Now I'm off to go trick-or-treating with these boys...

Photobucket

(.....Okay, that's an obvious lie.  But I am taking my niece trick-or-treating.  She's dressing up as Alice from Twilight.  I know, she's awesome.)

Will you be doing NaNoWriMo?

For those of you that don't know being an author has pretty much been my dream since I was about 10. While I've tried and tried, I've never finished one of my wannabe novels.  (I have over about thirty stories or more just dying for an ending.) At the beginning of this year, I told myself if I did not finish one of my stories, I was giving up on the dream all together. Due to many things in life getting in the way, guess what? I still haven't written a novel.  So, I signed up for NaNoWriMo.

I'm sure most of you know what NaNoWriMo is. For those of you that don't, I will give you a quick run down. The idea is start with a new story on November 1st, and write your novel by the end of the month. The minimum requirement is 50,000 words.

For my NaNo novel, I didn't exactly start out with a fresh new idea. It's more of an old story idea that I stripped down to its' undies and started over with. So in this round about way, it's still a new fresh idea. (At least that's what I'm telling myself so everyone just go with it.)

While I love reading Young Adult, I cannot write it to save my life. I've tried many times, but it just doesn't work for me. A lot of my stories are about girls, like me, who are in their early twenties. We'll go with the genre of Women's Fiction for now.

Here is my awesome cover art my muse and blogging partner, Cheryl, made for me. Along with my very weak attempt at writing a synopsis.

The Unexpected Clash of Strangers

Everything in Grace's life was going great. At least, semi-great until the day she finds herself caught in a random winter storm wearing a red sequin flapper dress and reeking of tequila. If matters couldn't be worse, she runs into ex-husband, Stephen, and his new fiancée.

In a desperate attempt not to loose in the ex-game; she blurbs out that she has landed a starring role in a movie, and that a stranger walking down the street is her new boyfriend, Ethan. What should have been a one time lie spins completely out of control. Suddenly Grace finds herself having to fake a relationship with a stranger and somehow put together a movie. Can she pull it off? Or has this struggling actress taken on much more than she bargained for?

To make sure I really give NaNoWriMo my all, I'm making myself MIA from blogging for the first week of November.  I did say I was going to be MIA from everything else on the net, but I'm still going to be checking in on things.

If you are planning on signing up this year or already have, feel free to add me to your buddy list:

Review - Family Affair by Caprice Crane

Family Affair by Caprice Crane

Released: September 2009
Publisher: Bantam
Genre: Adult - Women's Fiction
Pages: 368

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

When Layla Brennan married her high school sweetheart, Brett Foster, she finally got the big, loving family she’d always wanted: his. Now she’s closer to Brett’s parents than he is, partners with his sister in a successful pet-photography business, and confidant to his younger brother. She couldn’t be more of a Foster if she’d been born one. There’s just one problem: Brett wants a divorce. Stunned and heartbroken, Layla turns to the Fosters for comfort, only to realize that losing Brett means losing them as well. What else can she do but sue him for the most valuable thing he’s got–namely, his family. Breaking up may be hard to do, but for Layla and Brett it’s even harder to undo.

---

The words hilarious, heart warming, fun, and flat out wonderful first come to mind when I think of Family Affair. Caprice Crane knows how to write a story with such unique characters and wild antics that make me laugh so hard I nearly pee my pants.

When I cracked open the book, I will admit, the first couple chapters that involved Layla didn't really grab me like normal. But things quickly took off and just kept getting better and better. I was a little sketchy about having some many different characters telling the story, but Crane did it perfectly. I think that's what really made this story stand out was hearing both Layla and Brett's side of view. With an added bonus of knowing what the family was going through as well.

I loved how this novel portrayed that one perfect couple from high school and how un-perfect their lives can easily be. I cannot say enough how the dynamics of the family really just made this story all it was. There were so many hilarious stunts Layla and Brett both pulled to try and grab the family's attention.  Or the things they did just to get someone to be on their side. If you've never read one of Caprice Crane's novels, you are missing out! Each one just gets better and better.

A helpful site for bloggers

I know a lot of bloggers use sites to see how many visitors they get, where most of their readers are from, etc. I wanted to share what free site I've been using and find very helpful.

It has the basic show of traffic, popular pages, where your readers are from, etc. But there are some other neat things about this site. Like how people even find your blog. Here are some things people have typed into search engines and somehow got here (I find them all pretty funny):

• Jack says books

• Which blogger is a klutz who trips over the most bizarre situations?

• Skinny dipping boys

• What types of characters does Stephenie typically write about?

I also like knowing what pages are the most popular. (Usually if I'm running a giveaway, those are at the top.) When I wrote my review of Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr, I included a picture of my first tattoo - it just seemed fitting. That was months and months ago and it still gets a lot of hits. (Though I think most people are looking for the tattoo mentioned in the book and wind up seeing mine instead.)

Then there is the issue with Anonymous commenters that I know a lot of bloggers have problems with. The site also shows you exactly where each person who visits your page is from, what time, and a referring link of where they entered the page they're commenting on. So you can see if it's the exact same person over and over again. (Which in my experience has happened.) This might also come in handy for those that report abuse on their sites.

I've only used this particular website on the blog. I know there are a lot of other ones out there that do the same thing. If you use a different site for this sort of thing, please tell me. I'd love to see what the differences are.

Review - Devoured by Amanda Marrone

Devoured by Amanda Marrone

Release Date: September 2009
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Genre: Young Adult - Paranormal
Pages: 304

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Megan’s twin sister Remy died in an accident nine years ago, and she’s been haunting her ever since. Knowing how crazy that sounds, Megan keeps this secret to herself and tries to lead a normal life. But when she takes a summer job at Land of Enchantment to keep an eye on her new boyfriend and his lovesick best friend, Samantha, she meets fellow employee Luke who can see Remy, too. Things get even twistier because Megan’s new friend Ari is sporting a massive crush on Luke, who seems to be developing a massive crush on Megan…making for a love triangle that’s positively possessed.

Megan wants to keep her distance from Luke, but when Remy’s visions get crazy violent; she knows she needs his help. Because someone’s definitely in danger...the only question is who?

---

This is the first time I've read a YA book that held the fairy tale vibe to it.  I love the whole idea of more books like this, but I was back and forth on Devoured.

I got that Megan was supposed to be Snow White in the story. But besides maybe two other characters, I have no clue who the others were supposed to be. Or if they even were part of the fairy tale mix. (Note: I was informed in a comment that this was not a re-telling of Snow White. But when reading, that's the vibe I got from it. *shrugs*)  Besides Megan and Luke though, the rest of the characters weren't really developed.  Half of the time I felt like there were just random voices being thrown in everywhere. Also when certain events happened, Megan's emotions were seriously lacking. I felt it was hard to connect to a character like that.

The setting of the story was great.  I loved how Megan worked a theme park called Land of Enchantment. It really gave the story more of a fairy tale vibe. Megan's dead sister, Remy, who was always poking around made for some creepy scenes.  I also liked the talking mirror part as well.  I guess my main thing besides side characters is I wished the book was more paced out.  The beginning was thrown together so quickly and the ending - while the twists and surprises were great - it was all crammed together at the end.  All in all, not too bad of a read and I liked it a lot better than her other two.

Review - Carpe Corpus by Rachel Caine

Carpe Corpus by Rachel Caine

Book Six in the Morganville Vampire series

Released: June 2009
Pages: 256
Publisher: Signet
Genre: Young Adult - Paranormal - Mystery/Thriller

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

In the small college town of Morganville, vampires and humans lived in (relative) peace-until all the rules got rewritten when the evil vampire Bishop arrived, looking for the lost book of vampire secrets. He's kept a death grip on the town ever since. Now an underground resistance is brewing, and in order to contain it, Bishop must go to even greater lengths. He vows to obliterate the town and all its inhabitants-the living and the undead. Claire Danvers and her friends are the only ones who stand in his way. But even if they defeat Bishop, will the vampires ever be content to go back to the old rules, after having such a taste of power?

---

With Claire and Michael both being forced to do Bishop's beckoning, Shame being locked up, and Eve...poor, poor Eve was left in the dust. I was pretty nervous for my favorite characters and what would happen between their relationships with so much going on. If you've read the series so far (which I hope you have because if you haven't started with Book One you shouldn't be reading this review) you can tell how the characters have grown. Every time there a scene between Shane and Claire came up, I got giggly. I think my character crush on Shane will never die. He is perfect in his Shane way.

One thing I can always trust with Rachel Caine's writing is that she keeps me on my toes. There are people/vampires in this series you trust one minute and the next you're going, wait what?! But with all the good guys and villians, there is one character in this series that drives me insane. I use to love to hate her, but now I just want her gone. I know it's good to have a mean girl villain, but Monica Morrell drives me insane! Every time she pops up in the story, I just want someone to knock her out.

Whatever complaints I had with the last installment, Carpe Corpus made up for it! It had the perfect twists and best ending. Besides Glass Houses, this is my new favorite installment out of the series. I cannot wait to read Fade Out and luckily for me, it comes out next month :)

Review: Lord of Misrule by Rachel Caine

Lord of Misrule by Rachel Caine
Book 5 in the Morganville Vampires Series

Released: Janurary 2009
Pages: 256
Publisher: Signet
Genre: Young Adult - Paranormal - Thriller/Mystery

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

In the college town of Morganville, vampires and humans have coexisted in (relatively) bloodless harmony...until the arrival of Bishop, a master vampire who threatens to put the evil back in evil undead and smash the fragile peace. But Bishop isn't the only threat...

Violent black clouds promise a storm of devastating proportions. As student Claire Danvers and her friends prepare to defend Morganville against the elements - both natural and unnatural - the unexpected happens: Morganville's vampires begin to vanish one by one. Discovering why leads Claire to one last choice: Swear allegiance to Bishop...or die.

---

I really love this series. It's very different from most vampire stories in which you're mean Team Human than anything else. Normally I'm whizzing through these books, but this one was a bit hard for me to stick to. It focused a little bit more on the town where as I like reading about the Glass House gang. Maybe that's why this one wasn't one of my favorites. I love it when Claire, Shane (and I do love me some Shane still), Eve, and Michael are all together. But I do also understand that sometimes thing do have to be shook up a bit.

Basically all hell has broken loose in Morganville. This is kind of a normal thing but we're given much more look into what is happening now that Bishop has decided to take over. Bishop is a great villian. He's a ruthless vampire that has no mercy for anyone. With the mix of different characters through out the town, you really start questioning who's on who's side. There are so many different characters too. You never know who is going to pop up. Basically this one was more chalked full of information and plot setting. Trust me, Rachel Caine knows how to plot out a book. So while it's not one of my favorites, you can tell she's leading it up to something big to happen in the next one.

Review - Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

Released: October 2009
Pages: 400
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Genre: Young Adult - Paranormal - Fallen Angels

Rating:  5 out of 5 stars

For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch came along.

With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment.

But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure who to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.

For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life.

---

Let me point out how beautiful the cover is. It just screams: I am awesome and you should read me! What it’s screaming is true. It was nearly impossible for me to put this book down. When I did have to put it down, I kept wondering what was going on.

The plot was excellent! I think fallen angels are going to be my new favorite thing to read about. Maybe other people are good at pegging the good guy and the bad guy, but in this story I wasn’t for sure. One minute I thought someone was good and then the next things would flip around. I loved how the author threw in some great twists and kept everything rolling.

I’m just going to dive right into Patch. I think this is the first time I've probably cared more about the guy then the MC. The attraction and yet fear of him Nora has was written very well. She shouldn’t like him. I shouldn’t have liked him. Somehow she’s drawn to him and this made me drawn to him. He was cocky, dangerous, could possibly be a psychopath, and pretty much took the cake on bad boys. There is no gray area with him though. You’re either gonna love him or you’re gonna hate him. If you hate him, you're probably not going to enjoy this story. I can see why a lot of people wouldn’t love him for all the reasons I just listed. But what can I say? I'm a sucker for a bad boy.

As for side characters, I had a love/hate relationship for Nora’s best friend, Vee. She did bring a lot of comical snarky moments into the story. At first, I really enjoyed her, but sometimes I raised my eyebrows thinking this is what a best friend acts like?!

After I finished the book, I realized there was something bugging me. And it was Nora. I’m not for sure if it’s because I got so caught up in the plot and wanting to know more and more of what Patch was going to do that I basically overlooked her. She was an easy character to see what was going on through, but at the same time I didn’t think she was developed as much as she should have been. It was like at times she was just along for the ride. I hope in the second book she’s developed more and maybe not so naĂŻve about things. Another thing is I'm not compeletely sure I'm buying into Patch's feelings towards Nora yet. While I did have some concerns and raised eyebrows at some points - I cannot wait to read the sequel and find out what's going to happen to these two next.

--Also my friend Brittany has just started a book and graphics blog. I'm going to share two of the banners she made for Hush, Hush. While reading the story, I kept picturing Ethan Peck as Patch so I was super giddy when she made this. Take a looksie:

And this one...*swoons* *faints* *dies*

Go check out Britt's blog, The Ultimate Dumpees, to see more!

Also don't forget to swing by the Hush, Hush fansite: Fallen Archangel.

What's Happening This Month

You might have noticed the new banner the blog is sporting. I literally squealed when my amazing talented friend, Brittany, sent it to me. Isn't it pretty? I'm in love with it! Brittany rocks so much that she even made me a couple different banners that I will be roating throughout the month.

I couldn't be happier that right now I'm sitting here writing this post while wrapped up in a blanket. No more air conditioning or having to deal with my hair turning into an afro due to the humidity. Fall is here and I am so excited!

There has always been something about Fall that puts me in a good mood. Maybe because it gets cool enough that I can wear hoodies and long sleeves. Or maybe because the trees look so beautiful with all their changing colors. And of course my favorite holiday happens to fall (no pun intended) around the same time: Halloween!

Because of this I decided to do something special for October.  First, I promise you (and this time I'm not lying) there is going to be reviews coming your way!  You'll see more of them leaning towards the paranormal and supernatural because I'm in the mood for some spooks, vampires, werewolves, witches - all of it! To add to the fun, I'm inviting everyone to come trick or treat at the blog this month! While I can't see you all dress up in cool costumes (though if you want to share pictures, I'd love to see!) and collect candy in cyberspace....you can enter giveaways! So be on the look out for those popping up this month.

Now I'll leave you with one of my favorite Halloween songs centered around one of my favorite shows. It's awesome.

Cirque Du Freak / Vampire Assistant Giveaway!

Are you a lover of the paranormal? How about vampiries? What if you just love getting free stuff?

If you're still with me then check out the first giveaway of a few giveaways going on for the month of October:

Do you love to be scared? Then don't miss the terrifying adventure that begins when Darren and his best friend, Steve, get tickets to the CIRQUE DU FREAK, a wonderfully bizarre and creepy freak show. Brace yourself for thrills and chills as the boys witness a parade of grotesque creatures and face their deepest fears by entering the darkest world of the vampire. In the blood-curdling tradition of Anne Rice and Stephen King, CIRQUE DU FREAK will have you shrieking for the next horror show!

On October 23rd, the books are hitting the big screen with The Vampire's Assistant. Take a look at it here:
